Monroe Elementary School 2-Story Modular Classroom Building

To address increasing student enrollment and space constraints, the San Francisco Unified School District chose a vertical expansion strategy by constructing a new two-story modular building. This project, a collaboration with JLC Build—the fourth in their partnership—was executed with impressive efficiency. Over a 14-month period, JLC handled everything from bidding and design to DSA approval and site work. The modular construction approach, which included slab-on-grade foundations, modular floor and roof frames, and prefabricated wall panels, enabled rapid completion in less than 5 months.

The new building comprises 11 classrooms and a teacher’s lounge, thoughtfully designed to accommodate the district’s growing needs. A separate elevator and stair tower were integrated to ensure full accessibility. The strategic placement of the new building adjacent to existing structures allows for efficient use of shared facilities, such as elevators and stairs, enhancing the overall functionality of the school campus. This project exemplifies how modular construction can provide timely and effective solutions for educational institutions facing space and enrollment challenges.
